Are you coming to UDEM on an exchange for a year or longer?

The type of visa that you need is “Temporary student resident.”

Consult the website of the corresponding embassy or consulate to learn about the specific requirements.

General requirements:

  • Original passport that is valid for at least three months longer than your intended stay in Mexico. Photocopies of the main pages (personal data, expiration date, and photograph).
  • Visa application form, duly completed and bearing your signature. The application form is available at the website of the corresponding embassy or consulate.
  • Acceptance letter from UDEM. Sometimes you will be asked to submit a photocopy and sometimes they will keep the original document. Because of this, we suggest that you always keep a copy.
  • You must prove financial solvency and that you can provide yourself with at least USD$300 per month.
  • If the holders of the bank account that you will be using for proof of financial solvency are your parents, you must submit the banking certificate and a letter of promise from your parents in which they pledge to provide to support you financially during the duration of your stay in Mexico. If you have a scholarship, you must submit a letter of proof that includes the amount of your scholarship.
  • Photographs (the format and number vary in each embassy and consulate).

Upon your arrival (all countries)

When you arrive at the first port of entry into Mexico (airport):

  1. You will receive a Multiple Immigration Form (FMM) from the airline or at the first port of entry. You must duly fill in this form. Check “Otros” (other) in the box that asks your purpose of travel and “Canje” (exchange) in “Estancia Máxima hasta 30 días” (maximum stay 30 days).

  2. At your first port of entry, show your Multiple Immigration Form (FMM), along with your “temporary student resident” visa (which is attached to your passport, and your UDEM acceptance letter. You should tell the agent that you are in Mexico to study. We suggest that you bring with you all of the documents that you presented at the embassy or consulate in case the immigration officer requests any additional documents

  3. Make sure that the Immigration Officer acknowledges and marks the option “Canje” (Exchange) in the section “Estancia máxima 30 días” (Maximum stay 30 days) on your Immigration Form (FMM). Also, make sure that the Immigration Officer sets the stamp upon your visa student and nowhere else on your passport.

Important: It is essential that your Immigration Form (FMM) be marked “Canje” (Exchange) and your visa stamped to normalize your stay in Mexico. If “Canje” (Exchange) is not checked on your form and your visa is not stamped, you will be required to leave Mexico and ensure that your FMM is correctly marked this time.

You should exit the first port of entry with your FMM correctly filled in.
