The story of ExaUDEM Andrea Rodríguez Zavala (LDE '12) began in May, 2009, when she represented UDEM at the “14th Interamerican Contest on Human Rights,” organized by the American University Washington College of Law. After this experience, she decided to set off along the path of Human Rights. “I took my first steps as a litigator in Human Rights in 2010, through an itinerant Human Rights clinic, jointly with the National Supreme Court of Justice,” she told us.

In 2012, before graduating from UDEM, she decided to apply to CEJIL Washington, the most important Human Rights Strategic Litigation NGO. She obtained her internship one month before she graduated. Upon her return, Andrea made the decision to forge her own path as a litigator, with her own law firm.

In 2015, after her first opportunity and her first editorial column in the El Norte newspaper, Father Luis Eduardo Zavala, Director General of Casa Monarca, humanitarian help to migrants, decided to add our ExaUDEM to the Casa Monarca team.

Currently, Andrea’s work focuses on being a litigator and defender of the human rights of migrants, through the Legal Office of Casa Monarca, where her contribution has ranged from seeking mechanisms to protect migrants to attending to matters concerning the regularization of their migratory status. Concurrently, she provides support to research projects and projects to generate public policies in favor of migrants.

Since then, she has not worked as a litigator in Monterrey only, but also in the United States, through the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, based in Washington, D.C.

"I have presented two research works, one of which was accepted at the Inter- American Court of Human Rights, based in Costa Rica. Additionally, I have been a speaker at the local, national, and international level and I have had the opportunity of lecturing in local universities,” she told us.
