The Coalition for Academic Freedom in the Americas (CAFA) condemns the violation of the physical autonomy of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, located in Lima, by the Peruvian National Police on Saturday, January 21, 2023.

Beginning with the 2018 presidential campaign and election of President Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s higher education community has faced dramatically increasing threats to academic freedom and institutional autonomy. Scholars at Risk expresses concerns over these pressures in a submission to the UN’s Universal Periodic Review of Brazil.
