ID 1415 Low-Intermediate Mandarin Chinese
Students will become familiar with more advanced aspects of Chinese culture and society. They will develop the habit of reading. They will compose short letters and essays about various topics from daily life. They will be introduced to basic aspects of Chinese poetry and literature. They will finish the course with an active vocabulary of 1000 characters, applied to the four language skills.
ID 1414 Pre-Intermediate Mandarin Chinese
Students will be able to have more fluent conversations about daily topics such as shopping, ordering at a restaurant, booking a hotel, taking a taxi, asking for directions, etc. For this purpose, the basic Chinese verb tenses will be used (present, past and future). Students will continue to learn about important aspects of Chinese culture (for example, interesting places to visit in China). Students will be able to have slightly more complex conversations about simple topics. They will be able to describe themselves and their families, their daily routines, ask and give simple directions to neighboring places and they will practice short, simple conversations in a restaurant. ID 1325 Upper-Intermediate German
This course prepares students for the Certificate in Intermediate German by giving them training in skills such as global text understanding, selective text understanding, written expression, formal letter writing, and oral expression. Mock tests will be conducted and feedback will be provided on them.
ID 1320 Intermediate German
Students will be trained to acquire the vocabulary and skills required to take the Certificate of German as a Foreign Language Examination. They will develop their speaking, listening, and reading comprehension skills. They will also be able to write short texts in German.
ID 1315 Pre-Intermediate German
Students will apply previously acquired knowledge to various concrete situations of every-day life through dialogs and group conversations: going shopping, at the airport, at the doctor's office, at the university, among others.
ID 1311 Upper-Elementary German
Students will understand most of the common situations of daily life with help from their interlocutors; and they will be able to function at survival level. The students will also understand simple readings and will be able to write them as well, thus achieving a better level of communication.
ID 1305 Elementary German
Students will broaden the knowledge acquired during the first level. They are expected to express likes and dislikes, preferences, suggestions, and advice for daily situations such as traveling, places to visit, food, and restaurants. They will also be able to talk about the future to make plans for practical purposes and to express their wishes, goals, and the actions leading to those goals.
ID 1225 French: Reading and Composition
Students will read and understand academic texts and will learn how to write summaries and argumentation essays, and to express their opinion in French in order to acquire a better command of the language and a better understanding of the French culture.
