Diego Andrés Aguilar Peña
Diego Andrés Aguilar Peña comes from La Paz, B.C.S. He majored in Law and is married. His hobbies are fishing and baseball. He believes that goals are attained through consistency in his actions, which are aimed to achieving his objectives. Furthermore, he defines himself as “a person who reflects deeply before making a decision. I like projecting leadership to my students and peers by guiding through example and conveying what I know. I think I am an effective communicator and that is why I like teaching. I like solutions based on logic and paying attention to details.”
As one of his main achievements, he highlights the invitation he received to participate as International Attorney at Cassidy Levy Kent (USA) LLP, a Washington, D.C.-based international Law firm.
I have been the only Mexican to receive the Arthur T. Vanderbilt scholarship granted by New York University (NYU), which covered 100% of my tuition fees. This allowed me to complete the Master in Corporate Law program at this university in 2012. Additionally, I have won scholarships from CONACyT, SEP, and other organizations to pursue studies in Mexico and abroad. During my life, I have received around MX$1.5 million pesos in scholarships.”
While working full time as an associate with law firm Cantú, Estrada y Martínez Abogados, Diego Andrés did a Master’s in Business Law at UDEM (Cum Laude 2009). He obtained the highest grade point average in his class, receiving a mention for academic excellence in his dissertation for degree completion.
Moreover, while he was an intern with this law firm, he completed his Bachelor of Law degree (Cum Laude 2006), achieving the highest grade point average of his class and an mention for academic excellence. Additionally, he won the Thesis-of-the-year award, granted by the Department of Law.
Currently, he holds the position of International Legal Manager at Alfa, where he has had the opportunity of advising the group’s enterprises on company acquisitions, disinvestments, financings, credit restructuring, stock issuances and operations, international controversies, as well as international agreements in general. Besides, he has been an adjunct professor with UDEM’s Department of Law since he was 25 years old. He teaches the course Commercial Agreements and Operations.
He shared with us that the key to reaching success is “being consistent and being aware that for every action there is a consequence, knowing that the only way to reach my goals is planning where I want to go, and working toward that goal. For example, earning a scholarship or being admitted to a master’s degree program is not about sitting down to see what you have done when the time to apply comes, and using it to your advantage. Rather, it is about working in advance to generate qualities that you know will help you reach your goal in the future.”
One day, somebody asked me ‘Do you think it is because you got good grades that you have your current job?’ My answer was “no”, but thanks to my good grades I was able to reach some small goals which, together, helped me to get where I am now,” added Diego.
His plans for the future are transcending professionally and raising a family, based on the same values that he received at home and at UDEM.
